Growing up and looking after yourself.

I’ve always had a love hate relationship with my skin since my early teens. I noticed a huge change in it and it gradually became worse over the years. I tried going to the DR and all I was given were tablets and lotions that aggravated my skin. The lotions dried my skin right out and made my whole face very tight and sore. My skin was very red and inflamed. I began to lose confidence and became very upset with my appearance due to tother girls being very mean and calling me names. I was referred to Dermatology but they didnt really give or do anything for my skin concerns. I was told to try a foundation to cover the redness and that I would eventually grow out of it. I thought by covering it up it would stop the problem but it only made it to look worse due to the dry areas that clung to the foundation.

Over the years my skin went from getting worse to almost clearing up and repeated this sequence on and on throughout my teenage years. Nothing seemed to help and I just gave up trying to find a solution. I felt that no one was there to help and I got very frustrated. Becoming a teenager is a hard experience as it is let alone feeling more down with the state of your skin and having no one to give you advice. It wasn’t very pleasant to look at and I hated to look at myself in the mirror so I tried to avoid them at all costs. It did affect how I felt about myself and it got me down a lot. I didn’t like the way I looked at all. It felt like I was being punished for something. It made me feel that it was just myself feeling this way. Every other girl in my class and school seemed to have perfect skin and looked flawless.

When I started modelling it was here where my skin care journey kicked off.  I had no previous knowledge or no one I knew told me the importance of a good skin care regime. I was working with beauty and skin care professionals who took at interest in my skin and gave me advice on what products to use and foods that will help. I was educated on the type of skin I have and how best to keep it healthy. I began to feel more confident again and enjoyed being a teenager.

As your skin is the largest organ of the human body its very important to look after it. Over time I have seen my beauty product collections change and grow. This is important as your skin renews every four weeks. So by changing products is a good things to do . It is important to add that you might not see a difference straight away with your skin. Don’t every feel down or lose interest in your skin or never give up hope. Keep educating yourself on new treatments and products until you find what works for you.

I really enjoy pampering myself these days with new products and see my skin so differently. It is true what they say, “What you put into your body is what you get out”. I’m a huge believer in drinking lots of water to help clear up your skin from impurities. I also enjoy using face masks and having facials done to make sure my pores are as clean as they can be to ensure no breakouts.

Just as important are your teeth. We only get one set of teeth so keeping them clean and healthy is so important. I have really thin gums so finding a tooth brush that isn’t too rough or big has always been an issue for me. I find the soft manual ones don’t clean as well yet the medium cleans but it also is causing me to brush too hard. My dentist recommended using an electric tooth brush as they clean more effectively and stop you from pressing too hard against your gums. Which is a good way of keeping your gums from getting damaged. I did some research into what ones are good and value for money. I also didn’t want a noisy toothbrush or one that was too bulky for taking on holiday.

I came across the brand Ubersonic which is  a new brand that I hadn’t heard been aware of until now. I was excited and intrigued to learn that this tooth brush is made from the same material as an Iphone! How Cool! Not only that but it is the world’s first aluminium tooth brush which is very cleaver. From reading more about this product I decided I’d love to try this toothbrush for myself. It not only looks good but it’s very easy to use and it is not bulky at all which makes this product perfect for me. The tooth brush is not noisy either which is a bonus. The tooth brush is so lightweight and easy to manoeuvre about your mouth without it rubbing or causing any unnecessary bleeding. The bristles are soft yet still give your teeth a good clean which is another requirement I had been searching for.

This product lasts ages without needing charged up. There is a red warning light that flashes to alert that it is needing charged which is a good visual aid to have. I am very impressed with this product, I even take it with me when I go travelling as it is easy and convenient to pack. It even comes with a travel safe clip which is really handy as nothing will bump into it. This company really have designed a fantastic product that is one of a kind. The best part is it only costs £19. Go check out the website: Ubersonic .

I am really happy with this tooth brush and have actually enjoyed cleaning my teeth. I am so glad that I found this company. I have been using this tooth brush for over three months and hand on heart won’t change brand.

Thank you for reading.

The Vintage Beauty Box

Hello and welcome to nicspicknmix. On the blog today I will be writing about this little gem which has had a makeover and a new addition to the team. The vintage beauty box based in ST Andrews has been growing from strength to strength that the need for expansion was a must.

The Vintage Beauty Box is owned by Aileen ho has vast amounts of knowledge both as a professional make up artist and as a skin specialist. They specialise in customer satisfaction and will do everything to make you feel comfortable. The treatments that are available are tremendous they offer a wide selection from waxing to wedding make up. With the relaunch comes even more variety. They now offer vita liberate spray tan. I had never heard of this brand before but was intrigued to find out more. I don’t often spray tan due to being very pale and I’m not a fan of the tango look. Aileen recommended this brand to myself as it is designed to avoid the orange tint and that nasty I’ve just been tanned smell. So I’ll definitely be trying this tan out and share my before and after results with you. If this is right up your street Aileen currently has a great offer on, Tan Thursday any appointment made between 2pm-8pm will be discounted to £15 instead of £25! Just in time for the weekend prep. If tan isn’t your thing then why not opt for some nail treatments from their shiny new nail bar. They also offer make up applications and lessons at their glamorous make up stations. The Vintage Beauty Box loves students, in fact they have two days dedicated to them on a Mondays and Tuesdays where a discount of 10% is available.

I was invited along to attend the relaunch of the beauty salon which was very exciting. The salon is situated in the heart of St Andrews which is a fantastic location. Parking is a little difficult but there is on street and other places nearby to park which means the salon is in walking distance. On arrival at the salon I was very impressed with the new layout. I was so excited to see all the new add ons and what the new beauty room would be like. They have still kept the very essence of the calming, clean and natural colourings as before which I am a fan of . The atmosphere is still very relaxing – in fact I felt relaxed just being there which was a lovely feeling. They now have two beauty rooms and a tan room which means more availability. I have attached images of the beauty rooms and tan room for you to get a feel of the set up. I will also include links to the websites and social media accounts so you can all check out the treatments .

I am really excited to see what else is in store for this beauty salon and look forward to booking myself in for treatments. Please do check them out.

Thank you Aileen for inviting me to the relaunch. The websites are here:

liebster Award 2

Hello and welcome to nicspicknmix.
I am delighted to share with you all my second blog award. I have been nominated with the Liebster award (2). It's over whelming to have been nominated again. As the saying goes 'hard work pays off'. And this is a saying that sticks with me.

I was nominated by Mika Yoshimura from the blog A shade of mikachuu. Where she specialises in fashion blogging. I really enjoyed reading her posts and feel she grasps what we want to see from a blogger. I would like to thank her for taking the time to read my blog and for nominating my blog , it's such a boost when you see that your work is being enjoyed. I hope her blog grows in strength too.

I am required to give two pieces of advice to new bloggers. So I will give my opinion on what I felt would have helped myself looking back.

1) Find the time to blog regularly. This is something that I struggle with and an area I'm working on still. This is very important as you want to be as active as you can be to gain exposure. Once you get your theme and topics you'll be raring to go. You need to spend a lot of time researching what's important to include and having content that's relatable your followers. Making time will become much easier once you establish a routine around your other day to day priorities.
2) pick one social media platform which you are comfortable using and stick with it. Link it to your blog so your followers can read your posts . By using only one social media platform you gain knowledge of what works best for you. The best times to post on that platform so you gain more exposure too. The more active you are on that social platform the more interaction you will gain . Your audience will know where to find you online.

All in all, blogging is great, can be fun and really rewarding. Stick at it!

If you would like anymore advice please do get in touch . I am more than happy to help.

Blogger Recognition Award

Hello and welcome to nicspicknmix. I am so excited to share with you all that I was nominated for the blogger recognition award. This is my first award and I am so pleased to have been nominated . It actually means so much to me and shows that my blog is being enjoyed and read by people. It has encouraged me me to keep blogging and to push even harder.

How did I get the award?
I was nominated by Sophie Buchan of the blog trafottoz . She specialises in reviewing films, TV and restaurants in Glasgow (her hometown) and sometimes whilst abroad. I would like to thank Sophie for taking the time to read my blog and for believing that my blog was worth the award. I am over the moon.

How did I get into blogging?
I started of working in the fashion industry as a model and an actress. I have always had an interest in fashion and would experiment styling my own outfits and found that I really had an eye for it. I enjoyed seeing and wearing the different outfits on shoots and felt that I could express myself creatively through both fashion and make up. I have always been a creative person and felt by blogging this would allow me to keep being creative and hopefully inspire others through my work. Being petite has always brought barriers my way, be it getting trousers/ dresses etc to fit properly or being too small for certain modelling agencies. I wanted to stay working in the fashion industry and through blogging I feel I am able to achieve my dreams.

What advice would I give to bloggers?
Please don’t go into blogging if your only wanting to be famous or receive “freebies”. There are lots and lots of bloggers out there and some have been working hard for years and only now have they got to where they have aimed for through hard work and dedication. Blogging requires time, patience,a creative eye and determination amongst many more requirements.
You need to stand out from the crowd. Never copy other bloggers as that’s not going to help you anyway shape or form. Do lots of research on what’s current. I’m. It saying that being old school/vintage isn’t great but keeping up to date in your blogging area is crucial.
Don’t ever give up!

I am now required to nominate ten other bloggers who I feel deserve this award. It’s always really hard to choose by chosen bloggers are as follows:
1) Carly Philips : hicarlymarie
2) No serendipity: stylishmaze
3) Chr Marcel:kostantin
4) Cassidy Slockett : cassidysadventures
5) Wasifa Ahmad Hasan : sifascorner.
6) Curtis Roscoe : curtisluke
7) Media Verna Bector: hoppingfeet
8) Ellis Ellis : blackellis
9) Chanette Bing: chanettebing
10) Stephanie Omogun: melaninwonder

Here is What You Need to do now:

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
2. Write a post to show your award.
3. Give a brief story of how your blog started.
4. Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
5. Select other bloggers you want to give this award to.
6. Comment on each blog and let them know you have nominated and provide the link to the post you created.

Thank you for reading. I hope you are looking forward to seeing and reading what I have coming soon. Lots of exciting things coming.

Much love

Liz Earle

Hello and welcome to the blog. Today I am to be discussing one Skin Care brand that is a national treasure. This brand is none other than that of Liz Earle.

IMG_0287

My Liz Earle must haves

Liz Earle is a British beauty brand which was founded by friends Liz and Kim in 1995. Liz Earle originated from The Isle of Wight. Liz Earle is a daily beauty routine that uses natural and the best ingredients that nature must offer. Liz Earle pushes the importance of living well to help your skin to be at its best. They do stress that beauty is from deep within but from research with lots of women has revealed that having healthy and happy skin boosts our confidence and self-esteem.

It is important to add that this beauty brand is not expensive and is a great way to pamper yourself and give your skin the nutrients that it requires without breaking the bank. Not only does this brand do skin care products but the range has expanded and now includes body care, hair care and make up – so there will be something within the range that you will absolutely adore. As I have mentioned previously about the brand using only the best ingredients but these ingredients are active which is why the products work straight away. This brand caters for all skin types and ages which is great. They also have products that are just for men- no need for the men in your life to steal your products! Everyone of their products are fuss free which is beneficial since many of us live busy and sometimes complicated lives so at least our skin care regime doesn’t add to that.

Liz Earle has eight key factors which are very important to them: ingredients, responsible sourcing, our environment, animal testing- Liz Earle doesn’t test their products on animals at all. They are certified under the Humane Cosmetic Standard by Cruelty Free International. I strongly agree with their beliefs as in this day and age we surely have better ways to test our products rather than putting animals through unnecessary pain and suffering.  They also take this a step further and do not use any animal ingredients in their products. They do however, use animal friendly ingredients such as beeswax and manuka honey. One other important aspect to mention is that all their products are suitable for vegetarians. They use plant oils, extracts and preservatives -some formulas are completely free from preservatives all together whereas others have very little. Lastly, the packaging is very important, Liz Earle uses packaging that doesn’t damage our environment. Another great aspect of this company not only do they produce natural ingredients but they want to nourish our planet too.

As I have mentioned, Liz Earle likes to have a fuss-free skin care range and uses naturally active botanicals to leave your skin looking and feeling healthy. I am going to be taking you through a few of my skin care must have.

I was introduced to this brand back in July 2016. Previously to this I had never heard of this brand before and I am quite picky when it comes to my skin due to having sensitive skin and eczema. I was getting pretty fed up with the skin care regime that I had so was keen to try something new. Liz Earle offer complimentary treatments in stores that sell the brand. I feel that this is great service to offer as some people like myself are happier to try before they buy. I opted to have a facial. The Liz Earle employee made me to feel very relaxed and took a genuine interest in both myself and my skin. They went through the process with me and explained what would happen and what product to use when and what ones were suitable for my skin etc. I was given the full works of cleanse, tone and moisturiser.  The products were very light and did not cause any irritation in fact I felt a difference straight away with my skin. I could see a difference which was unbelievable. My skin was very smooth and felt so clean.

The product that caught my attention due to it be very different to anything I have used before was the cleanse and polish Hot Cloth cleanser. The awards that this product has won speaks for its results. This product has won one hundred and twenty-five to date and is still winning more! It has been described as the foundations to fabulous skin and the preparation for the next step in your beauty regime. Beauty experts from around the world love this product and I personally can see why. So, what is in this miracle product I hear you asking me? This product consists of cocoa butter to soften, smooth and moisturise, rosemary, chamomile and eucalyptus to tone, sooth and purify. This product is suitable for all skin types. The cleanse and polish is a cream based formula which deeply cleanses to instantly remove daily grime, pollutants and make-up. This product is also great for removing fake tan. It is like a cloth eraser- it’s like the ultimate cloth defeating stubborn dirt super hero! After use your skin feels very comfortable, balanced and exceptionally clean. Your skin doesn’t feel that horrible tight and dry way that you get from other harsher face washes nor did mine have any redness. I was really impressed with the pure-cotton cloth that is used to exfoliate your skin. This technique lifts away dead skin cells to reveal smoother, clearer and bright-looking skin. It’s very easy to use you massage the cleanser onto your face and neck- no water is required at this stage, you then rinse the cloth under hand-hot water, rinse then wipe off the cream. It is that simple. The next step involves instant boost skin tonic.

This tonic is non-drying and revitalises, soothes and brightens the skin. This product is so gentle and is also alcohol free. It also adds a layer of moisture to the skin. All that is required are two cotton wool pads and then sweep over the face and neck. If using cotton wool isn’t for you then there is the spritz spray version which you can spray directly onto the face. With the spritz spray you are also able to use this whenever you need it. It can even be used to cool you down. This is the option that I use. Again, this product is suitable for all skin types. I like how light and non-greasy this product is. It also smells so good.

The last step is the moisturiser which has two choices: Skin repair or Super skin. For those of us who need more moisture or have aging skin then it is recommended to use superskin. I use skin repair as my skin can get oily therefore I don’t want heavy products that will clog my pores and cause more oil production. It is here to highlight that this cream comes in different skin type formulas E.G Normal /combination. Therefore, with this moisturiser it is full of naturally active avocado and borage plant oils which work alongside your skins essential oils and it also contains vitamin E. Which is really helpful in replacing moisture. From using this moisturiser, I don’t feel that my skin is every dry or too greasy. It sinks into my skin brilliantly and not just sitting on the surface. By following these three daily essentials day and night you and your skin will feel great.

I have only touched the tip of the iceberg with all that Liz Earle has to offer but please do have a look for yourselves. There are so many helpful products that you will be spoilt for choice.

I have found more confidence in my skin and it’s all down to my new skincare regime. It has taken me years to find products that work for my skin and I am glad that I have.

No make up on at all

If you have any questions or need advice regarding the range, please do not hesitate to get in contact with myself. I can easily pass you on to the Liz Earle team.

I would like to thank  Liz Earle for kindly sending out products and allowing me to promote this unique and effective brand.

Thank you for reading and I hope you have enjoyed learning about this brand. I would appreciate any feedback and comments.

Overgate Shopping Centre: Instagram Takeover

snapchat-2052947185

Hello and welcome to my blog. Today I am talking about my time taking over the Instagram account of the Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee.

When it comes to blogging there are so many opportunities which keeps it so exciting. As the saying goes every day is a school day – especially with blogging. When I was asked if I would be interested to do a Christmas gift idea take over on their Instagram account, I was over the moon!

The Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee is one of the coolest places for shopping and even although we only have a small selection of shops we certainly do have a good variety. The Overgate is the only single-sided shopping centre in Europe- that is quite remarkable! The Overgate Shopping Centre hasn’t always looked the way that we see it today due to the rebuild which took place from 1998 to 2000.

The Christmas period is a very stressful yet fun time of year. Shopping for presents for your loved ones is so exciting yet it can be very tiresome too. I always laugh when people say that they prefer shopping for themselves as they know what they like. It is a true saying and one that many can relate too. I often find myself becoming stuck in a rut when it comes to ideas for presents for loved ones and will go for the safest options instead of trying out new gift ideas. So when I was asked to give gift ideas I thought this will be a great challenge for me and to push me out of my comfort zone which is a refreshing thing to do from time to time.

When the day arrived I was so eager to get started. I honestly felt so excited and happy to be doing something different with my blogging. On arrival at the Overgate Centre I signed into their account on Instagram and firstly introduced myself, who I was and what I was to be doing today. It felt funny being on someone else’s account as I am so used to my own layout and contacts. Yet it was a challenge that I was happy to overcome and showed to me that I can be flexible and adaptable. The shopping centre was very busy with customers searching for the perfect gifts for their loved ones and there was a great buzz about the place.

At first I went to a few shops that I don’t normally go into, I thought this was a good idea as it would push me to try new things. I was pleasantly surprised and found so many possible gift ideas. I thought it would be a good idea to post a few of my favourite ideas up as not to overdo things and make people to feel overwhelmed. I made sure that I had a mixture of ideas for him/her and for the kids. I tried to take into account different price limits and to remember that different ages will be looking at what I posted up.

I really did enjoy visiting the shops and trying to come up with unusual gift ideas as well as the safer options too. There were a few customers who wondered what I was up to and kept watching me taking images of things which kept things interesting. As I posted my ideas on the Instagram page it was amazing to see how powerful the use of social media actually is. My posts were not up for long before there were “likes” and comments which was so inspiring and made me glad that my ideas were being accepted and hopefully, they were helping some people to find ideas of their own. I wanted to show that it is really the thought that counts instead of how much money you spend. After all, I feel we do get caught up in thinking that we need to spend so much on one another rather, than simply enjoying special moments together.

I have included some of the gift ideas that I came up with below:

Environ

Hello and welcome to the blog. Today I will be writing about my skin care consultation with Gemma (IIAA) Aileen (The Vintage Beauty Box, St Andrews based in Sophie Butler Hairdressing).

First of all, I will be giving some information about a South African brand called Environ. There are so many skin care products out there and easily accessible but what makes Environ different from these?

Environ has been created through science, beauty and care. With the use of science, Environ have created products that do make a huge difference to our lives. Most importantly helping to keep skin looking at its healthiest. Environ aim to keep skin beautiful for life.

Since 1990 Environ has been developing scientific beauty solutions and now they have over 140 products that sell worldwide. Their innovation has led to recognition and recommendation by industry professionals, film stars and supermodels. For example, many members from The Only Way Is Essex trust and use these products.

Environ was founded by DR Des Fernandes a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons at Edinburgh. He pioneered using vitamin A in cosmetic products to help counteract the harmful effects of the environment, pollution and stress. Vitamin A works to revitalise damaged or weaned skin giving a more healthier look. This development was discovered through extensive research.

Environ believes that skin has a life and in order for it to look beautiful and healthy it requires vitamin A. They have combined vitamin A with other essential skin nutrients such as antioxidants and peptides. This skin science helps your skin look and feel healthier.

In order to assist skin in becoming more comfortable with increased levels of vitamin A Environ created the vitamin step-up system. This is a gradual process where products with increasing amounts of vitamin A are used as the process progresses. Studies have shown that 98% of women in the United Kingdom are depleted in Vitamin A. Vitamin A also known as retinyl palmitate is essential for the growth of new and healthy skin cells.  Environ has been clinically proven to treat the epidermis to treat the living skin cells far deeper than ANY other cosmetic available on the high street.

Environ has a range of products for various requirements. The results from the skin care consultation are used to tailor the Environ products specifically required for the individual. In addition to the skin care products Environ has a range of instruments and devices that can be used in conjunction with the skin care products to further improve your skins overall look.

Through my modelling work I met Aileen Wallace-Edgar, a professional makeup artist and former trainer for the IIAA. She has worked within the beauty industry for over 10 years based within various salons and five star resorts. She has worked at London Fashion Week and at the BBC. She can now be found working in The Vintage Beauty Box located within Sophie Butler hairdressing, St Andrews. As you can see Aileen has a lot of valuable experience and insight knowledge of Environ having worked for the brand and also met the founder. Aileen personally invited me to come to the salon and experience the brand Environ. I honestly was so excited and really looked forward to embracing a new brand. This would also be my first time having a facial done with a machine! Various thoughts and feelings crept into my mind but all very positive ones.

When I arrived at the salon I was met by both Aileen and Gemma for my skin care consultation. Gemma and I had an informal chat about my skin and lifestyle to form part of the skin care analysis. This is an essential part of the process to gain and understanding of your skin.

14959158_10211555131020991_582120817_o

I was a little bit nervous about the next stage as it involved my skin being photographed in various ways. This included the three layers of the skin (The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands. The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue).

14923844_10211555130780985_548528267_o

The Three layers of the skin.

The process itself was painless and involved me not having to move from the comfort of my seat. All I had to do was place my jaw on the jaw rest and make sure that my eyes remained closed (as there was a bright flash). It is also important to add that you are not allowed to wear any make up for this procedure. It was crucial for you to remain as still as possible only for a few seconds. Even although I was apprehensive as this procedure was new to me I did however find the technology very fascinating. Instantly the results were in and in front of me. Now my nerves were beginning to kick in- what were they going to find? Surprisingly I shouldn’t have been worried as my results came back better that I had expected. See images from my actual consultation below.

I was also very lucky enough to be giving a mini facial taster session. Aileen was very patient with me and explained everything that was going to happen during the facial. As this was my first time having a mechanical facial I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Again, it was the fear of the unknown that took over me but as a beauty blogger I am always open to new products and techniques. In fact, I was really looking forward to it at the same time. As any facial goes you are lying down and made sure you are comfortable (Aileen has a heated bed – which was simply amazing). All the products that were recommended to me from the skin analysis were used. Aileen used the mechanical instruments to let me get a feel for how effective it was having the facial done this way. It was such a great experience and one that I would definitely do again. Once you have it done this way a normal manual facial just doesn’t have the same effect. You can really feel the products working and going deeper into your skin. I would also mention that it feels more clean as you aren’t getting someone else’s fingers all over your face. I liked the various sensations you felt with this type of facial. From using the mechanical equipment on my face there were moments where you could feel vibrations which didn’t hurt at all and another time when my eyes were closed I could see flashing lights that had a strobe effect. Again, it didn’t cause me any side effects or discomfort. Aileen also mentioned that I might get a metallic taste in my mouth which I never experienced. Throughout the whole facial I felt very relaxed and calm. Aileen is a true professional and made my time at her salon a great experience.

After the facial, Gemma kindly did the 1 minute make up challenge with me using products from Jane Iredale. She wanted to show me how quick and easy it is to apply this make up which doesn’t block pores. The coverage from the makeup was good and it felt so light weight on my skin. Right enough it didn’t take long at all to apply the mineral based products.

I found the images from the Visia analysis quite astonishing. It gave me a clearer understanding of my skin. I would highly recommend you all to undertake and experience this revolutionary process. Not only does it give a very clear and non-biased view of your skin but it also highlights what products are required to help your skin become more healthy.
